If you haven't dropped a gaff or a tag stick over the transom of a boat while dealing with a fish, you just haven't caught enough fish. This moment of embarrassment gets worse when you watch your favorite expensive gaff sink slowly into the abyss while your catch is still swimming on the end of the leader.
Rubatex Msds The good news is that almost every gaff or tag-stick pole handle is hollow. By drilling or cutting a small hole at each end of the shaft, you can now fill this void with a buoyant foam. I found an aerosol brand of expanding foam from the local hardware store works just fine. Insert the can's nozzle in one of the two holes and keep the other end clear to allow air to escape. Squirt the foam inside the pole until it is approximately two-thirds full. This amount allows for the expansion of the foam to continue to fill the cavity even after you have stopped squirting. Make sure you have laid down some old papers, as this is a messy process.

After it dries, cut or scrape the excess foam away from the holes and plug them with a dab of epoxy. This won't guarantee you won't embarrass yourself the next time you try to gaff a keeper dolphin, but at least you can circle around and recover the bobbing handle in the water.
