It Ain't Your Father's Tube
It Ain't Your Father's Tube

If your idea of being pulled in a tube behind a boat revolves around planting your butt in an old, much-patched, no-longer serviceable, black, semi-truck-large inner tube, have we got a news flash for you. Tubing, no longer an overlooked stepchild of the water-sports family, is one of the market's hottest activities. In fact, activity may be a poor description: Tubing has quite possibly become a sport in its own right, complete with a wide array of product offerings that include craft for single or multiple riders and include eye-popping color schemes.
Rubatex Msds One of the kookiest - and most popular - models out there is the Big Banana by Sport Chutes of Dallas, Texas. Who would have thunk it? The Big Banana, shaped like the fruit, of course, comes in sizes that accommodate from one to six riders.
When you buy conventional fluorescent tubes, be sure to get the "high accuracy" type for good color temperature. At most store displays, laminated cards carry the relevant information about every type of tube sold.
Rubatex Neoprene If you think a banana-shaped tube is a stretch, how about a ride on a sneaker-shaped tube? Straight Line of Redmond, Washington, earlier this year introduced the Odyssey. Tubers, either an adult or an adult and a child, sit deep inside the Odyssey's "tri-hull" design for a smooth, relatively (and that's the operative word) dry ride.
when you put the tube into the tire, throw a little Baby Powder in to reduce friction. Buying a spare tube for your trailer or jogging stroller could be overkill unless you'll be in a remote place for a long time. Tubes of all sizes are available at any bike shop. The odds of you needing a new tube are pretty slim, but if you want to be prepared, an extra never hurts. Just like a standard tire or bike pump, these tubes use Schrader valves.
Rubatex Pipe Like roller coasters? Or always craved the sensation of being inside a revolving clothes dryer? You might want to give The Twister from Omaha, Nebraska-based Sportsstuff a shot. Just crawl inside the large cylindrical tube, tell the boat driver to "Hit it," and you'll be on permanent spin cycle until the ride is over.
The vast majority of tires used on jogging strollers are air filled. filled tire is a tube. That tube, in this case a 12" Wheel Tube is subject to puncture just like a bike tube. You can either patch it, or you can replace it.
Rubatex Pipe Insulation Of course, when you're talking about solidly built, well-designed water toys, you're not necessarily talking cheap anymore. Suggested retail prices on tubes can run the gamut from about $50 for a traditional doughnut-shaped model to nearly $350 for one with all the bells and whistles.

Rubatex 180 And as product technology has become more sophisticated, drivers who tow tubers now have a few additional safety concerns. Most manufacturers advise keeping the speed in the 20 to 25-mph range. Drivers should also be particularly aware of judging distances when turning or whipping a tube outside the wakes. The boat, after all, may have plenty of space between that dock, but what about the tuber?

Rubatex 180 Fs "Water skiers have a lot of control in turning and can let go whenever they want, that's not true of tubers," points out Andy Remy, president of Fort Worth, Texas-based Ski Tubes Inc., which makes the Wild Thing, a doughnut-shaped tube that features a half-inch of foam padding in the seating area in the middle of the hole.
Rubatex 1800 Pat Carley, vice president of sales at Straight Line, adds that boat owners should invest in a heavy-duty rope if they plan on pulling a lot of tubes. The tow rope, he recommends, should have a so-called "break strength" of at least 2,000 pounds.
"You really need that with tubes nowadays because there's so much tension on the line when the boat is starting out and getting the tube on plane." - R.B.
