U.S. Olympic team sailor Randy Somnitz squashed one just that size in a hotel room during the 1998 IMCO North American Championships in Telchac, Mexico, in the Yucatan Peninsula. But giant scorpions were the least of the 40 competitors' problems encountered at the week-long event.

Montezuma's final toll came the last day when racers were hit with a higher hotel bill than had been previously published. Nevertheless, organizers planned a great event, with transportation, meals, hotel rooms, regional excursions and drinks of all concoctions included in one price. Exhausted not so much from racing but perhaps from dueling with Montezuma - who clearly is still very angry - this IMCO racer was glad to return home to normal-size insects, clean water and refrigerated meat. But I will miss the wind!
