Nalgene bottles were originally marketed over 30 years ago in the early days of the Nalgene Corporation. They quickly became popular among athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who needed to stay hydrated to continue their activities. The popularity of the bottles continues today. rubatex 320

Nalgene bottles are made of a type of plastic called polycarbonate resin, which is also known by the name of Lexan. rubatex rubber

The famous "unbreakable" reputation of Nalgene bottles is literal - Lexan is used in bulletproof windows. rubatex closing

However, the April 2003 volume of "Current Biology" attests that the plastic is not the wonder-material it was once thought to be. poly hunting feeders

According to the research of Dr. Patricia Hunt of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, the use of all polycarbonates, including Lexan, poses serious health risks. neoprene pads

The Oregon State Daily Barometer Online has taken a comprehensive look at Hunt's studies and the reaction to them. It explains how Hunt's lab traced chromosomal disorders, such as Down Syndrome, in lab rats back to the polycarbonate cages the rats lived in and the polycarbonate water bottles that they drank from. rubber manufacturer

The plastics, which were cleaned with harsh detergents, were found to leach a chemical called bisphenol A (BPA) into their surrounding environments. wholesale rubber

BPA mimics the female hormone estrogen and is an endocrine disrupter. Regular exposure to the chemical has been linked to interference with regular hormonal balances and growth patterns. It negatively affects prostate and breast tissue development, as well as sperm counts. rubber industry

"It is completely reasonable that harsh detergents would break down the chemicals found in Lexan," said Brad Chamberlain, assistant professor of chemistry. "Regarding how much leaching actually occurs, however, with something like mild soapy water, is more dependent on the age and wear of the bottle more than anything else." petroleum refiner

Polycarbonate plastics were originally thought to leach BPA only after they became well-used and discolored. More recent studies, however, show that, while poly-carbonates at this stage emit the highest levels of BPA, even new plastics leach low doses of the chemical. These low doses create the same health hazards as higher doses, meaning that these plastics are simply unsafe to use. rubatex international

In defense, the poly-carbonate industries devalued Hunt's findings because her studies were conducted only on rats, not humans. Hunt, however, countered in a November/December 2003 article for Sierra Magazine that "the human egg is more fragile than the mouse egg," and therefore is more susceptible to the health risks associated with BPA and polycarbonate plastics. rubatex neoprene

"The controversy is not exactly because of the fact that Lexan breaks down into hormone mimics," said Chamberlain, "but more because there isn't a clear answer yet as to how extreme BPA effects are." rubatex pipe insulation

Admittedly, the plastic is hard to avoid. Besides being used in the manufacture of water bottles, polycarbonates are also used to make cans, baby bottles, CD's, and computers. rubatex 180 fs

The alternatives to Nalgene bottles are, however, just as grim. Disposable water bottles, which are made of polyethylene terephthalate, should not be reused as they may leach DEHA, a known carcinogen. Bottles made of high-density polyethylene are safe to use but are difficult to find. rubatex 320

"It's true that there's definitely work that needs to be done to polycarbonates," said Chamberlain. "Right now, Lexan is not biodegradable and its raw materials are oil-based and war gas-based. The research done for a non-BPA polycarbonate is in its early stages, but I'd like to see a polycarbonate alternative that's biodegradable and carbon dioxide-based." rubatex rubber

Meanwhile, Nalgene's "Outdoor" Web site provides links for further discussion of the issue. It states that they "continue to firmly believe in the safety of [their] products." rubatex closing

"Am I worried about BPA acting as a estrogen mimic?" said Chamberlain. "Well, I'd rather be more concerned about Decorah's drinking water than the actual container it's drunk from." poly hunting feeders
