Increasing Insulation To Cut Bills

Rubatex Msds Think you have the proper amount of insulation installed in your house? Think again. Last year, the federal Department of Energy updated the data upon which it bases recommendations for minimum amounts of insulation in homes across the country. And while the formula used by the department has not changed, in many cases the cost of energy, a component of the formula, has.

Rubatex Neoprene This means that some homeowners who think they have enough insulation in their homes might benefit from supplementing what they have.

Rubatex Pipe And, of course, for those who have little or no insulation in their attics, now is certainly the time to install what is needed.

By reducing overheads you automatically improve the competitiveness of your business. Most businesses could quickly cut their heating, lighting and power bills by at least 10% without any capital investment whatsoever. Savings of 20% are possible with a little investment (which can have the same positive effect as a 5% increase in sales) and some companies have managed to cut their energy bills in half. Big savings, but how do you actually make them

Rubatex Pipe Insulation "Calculating the correct amount of insulation you need in your house is not just a simple issue of determining what your climate is and what type of house you have," said Alex Wilson, publisher of Environmental Building News, a newsletter published in Brattleboro, Vt. "You also have to factor in the average costs of energy in your area."

Installing attic door insulation in your home is a smart energy saving project. Using attic door insulation for the door or hatch cover will help to lower electricity, gas, or oil bills. Most of us already turn off light, water, and appliances when they are not needed, this is called conservation. Using attic door insulation falls along these same concepts.

Rubatex 180 To assist homeowners in doing that, Mr. Wilson said, the Department of Energy maintains an Internet site that allows property owners to plug in information about their homes the type of construction, the fuel used and the property location to get recommendations for the amount of insulation needed in various parts of the house.

Adding insulation to your home and inspecting your current insulation can help keep warm air in your home. As with weatherstripping, it can reduce your family's energy bill. Windows The essential areas to inspect and install insulation are around your attic, your basement and in crawl spaces.

Rubatex 180 Fs And last year, Mr. Wilson said, the department updated the energy cost data used to calculate the recommended amount of insulation for a given area. The change could mean that a house thought to have sufficient insulation two years ago might now have less than it needs.

Rubatex 1800 Therese Stovall, a senior research engineer at the department's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., said that homeowners who want to determine whether their insulation is adequate should first find out how much and what type of insulation they have.

Rubatex 320 She said that some homes might have mineral fiber insulation, including fiberglass and rock wool. Fiberglass, which is typically yellow, pink or white, can be either loose-fill or shaped into rolls or precut pieces called batts. Rock wool is usually loose-fill and gray with black specks.

Rubatex 373 Another common type of insulation, Ms. Stovall said, is loose-fill cellulose, which is made from recycled paper and cardboard with fire retardants added. Yet another type of insulation that might be found in an older home, she said, is vermiculite, a loose-fill, amber-colored substance. (Vermiculite is no longer used because the E.P.A. has found that some vermiculite insulation contains asbestos, a known carcinogen.)

Rubatex Rubber Knowing the type of insulation installed, Ms. Stovall said, is important because different substances provide different levels of insulating ability, or R-value. "The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness," she said. The R-value of loose-fill fiberglass is 2.5 per inch of thickness, while that of loose-fill cellulose is 3.5 per inch. That means that while 10 inches of cellulose would provide an R-value of 35, the same thickness of loose-fill fiberglass would provide an R-value of only 25.

Rubatex Tape Ms. Stovall said that while determining the type and amount of insulation is fairly simple when the insulation is between the roof rafters or the floor joists in the attic, it might be harder to calculate the R-value of insulation installed in exterior walls. One way to do that, she said, is to remove the cover plate from an electrical outlet (after turning off the power to the outlet) and look through the space between the box and the wall. "You may need to pull some insulation out of the wall to see what it is," she said.

Rubatex Closing Finally, Ms. Stovall said, homeowners should measure the thickness of any insulation in unfinished basement ceilings and walls and above crawl spaces. Once the type and thickness of the existing insulation is known, she said, homeowners can use her department's Web site to determine both the existing and recommended R-value for the various areas of the house. (Go to www.ornl.gov, search for the term "insulation fact sheet" and then click on the result.)

Rubatex Closed Cell Gasketing If the house could use more insulation, there are several options for adding to what is already there.

Felpro Gaskets Marvin Moore, director of the Association for Better Insulation, a group of insulation contractors based in Bowling Green, Ky., said that either loose-fill cellulose or fiberglass could be blown over existing insulation that is between the floor joists in an attic. (Caution should be used if the existing insulation is loose-fill vermiculite. While it can be covered with any other insulation and does not have to be removed, the vermiculite present should not be disturbed.)

Poly Products Supplies If the walls in a house already have insulation, Mr. Moore said, it will probably not be cost-effective to try to beef that up if the house is fairly new. If the walls are uninsulated or poorly insulated, however, it would probably pay to install insulation wherever possible. "You can either blow in cellulose or foam," Mr. Moore said, referring to polyurethane-based foam insulation that can be injected inside walls or even sprayed on the underside of the floor above a crawl space.

Poly Hunting Feeders Mr. Moore said that while homeowners usually hire a professional to blow in cellulose or foam, adventuresome do-it-yourselfers could tackle the job themselves. He explained that after first finding the space between the beams in an exterior wall, the homeowner would drill two three-quarter-inch holes, one about four feet from the floor and the other a few inches from the ceiling. The wand for injecting the insulation is then inserted into the bottom hole and the insulation is pumped in until it reaches that hole. The procedure is then repeated for the top half.

Shoreline 13171 17 Neoprene "It's really a quick and easy job," Mr. Moore said, putting the cost at $3 per square foot. And although polyurethane foams used in the past could produce toxic fumes if exposed to fire, the foams available today do not. For those who are skittish about polyurethane, there is another foam insulation product available, made from soybeans.
