Stand & Deliver

Stand & Deliver

Author: Andy Brandt
Bedford, New Hampshire, sailor Dave Schroeder had a tough time getting into the straps and sailing comfortably. According to Dave, when he finally would get his back foot securely into the rear strap, his board would "go crazy" on him, eventually sending him into the water. Watching him demonstrate his technique, his problem became crystal clear: Dave had the classic sit-down stance when he finally slipped into the straps, which would cause him to either bounce out of control, round straight upwind or launch forward. I told him his problem was a common one and easily corrected, and we got to work.

Rubatex Msds I started by adjusting Dave's upper body position. Dave's arms were bent, and he tended to sheet out the sail. When you sheet out the sail, two things can happen:

Rubatex Neoprene 1) Either your body weight gets transferred through your heels, creating a carving effect and rounding the board upwind, or 2) the board slows down and, with all that weight at the back, again rounds upwind.

Rubatex Pipe Even if you manage to keep planing, bending your arms tends to transfer your weight to the tail of the board, pushing it under water. Then buoyancy kicks in, and the board rebounds by trying to get back to the surface. This return motion makes you want to bend your knees to absorb the bounce, and even more bouncing ensues. Bending the knees also makes it difficult to keep your weight on your toes, and toe pressure is the main force keeping the board flat, which keeps you planing and allows you to apply pressure to the fin. This combination of heel weight and a bouncing board will usually carve the board upwind and can even cause you to catch a rail and toss you over the handlebars.

Rubatex 1800 I told Dave that to sail comfortably in both straps, it's imperative to rake back the sail with straight arms. Continuously sheeting with your arms straight maintains your body weight over the water, keeping much of the pressure off the board. He needed work on keeping his legs straight, creating lateral pressure on the fin instead of downward pressure on the tail, so we worked on his technique in that area as well. We worked on keeping his weight on his toes instead of his heels, which also helps keep the board from rounding upwind, as well as absorbing chop with the stomach instead of the legs to keep bouncing to a minimum. Last, I told Dave to keep his head out over the water and his gaze out toward the horizon, not on his straps. This helps prevent the shifting of body weight back toward the board. Where your head goes, your body is bound to follow.

In a relatively short time, Dave managed to keep things under control and have a lot more fun while planted in the straps.
