Fishing rods are often subjected to excessive handling abuse as baggage on airplanes. Slapping around inside a hard traveling case results in scratched rods and bent guides, especially if several rods are packed together or large roller guides aren't adequately cushioned to prevent them from touching other rods.

Rubatex Msds Hardware and plumbing supply stores offer a simple, inexpensive way to prevent travel damage: 3/8-inch-thick foam pipe insulation. These flexible foam pieces come in different diameters, are pre-slit and can be cut to length with a knife. If necessary, use tape to hold the insulation in place or cover with a cloth case for added protection before sliding the rods into your carrying tube.
