Your Suit Is All Wet
Your Suit Is All Wet
Author: Tom James
I'm not sure how to say this delicately, but your wetsuit probably sucks. Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm sure when you bought it, it was a wonderful, warm, life-giving second skin. But now, in light of new technologies, your old suit is a cold, stiff, lifeless eight-track tape player of a defense against the cold. In other words, it's obsolete. The new suits are that much better. But that's jumping ahead.
Rubatex Msds The purpose of a wetsuit is to keep you warm - period. It's not hard for any decent wetsuit to accomplish that mission. The key to a great wetsuit is one that will keep you warm with the minimum amount of restriction.

Rubatex Neoprene True, your old wetsuit probably keeps you warm. But compared to the new suits, it's inefficient. It's thicker, stiffer and less comfortable than it could be, which means it's tiring you out sooner and hindering your performance. Those used to be acceptable sacrifices in exchange for warmth, but these days it's a price you don't have to pay.

Rubatex Pipe By now, everyone knows that wetsuits are primarily made of neoprene rubber in varying thicknesses. Generally the thicker the rubber, the warmer the suit, but also the less flexible the suit. Other factors such as seam taping, type of neoprene and fit (obviously) come into play, but thickness is the key to both warmth and flexibility.

Rubatex 180 Power Flex, Ultra Flex, Ultra Stretch, Free Flex - call it what you will, the new rubbers are literally two or three times more flexible than what was the best stuff just a couple of years ago. According to Neil Pryde director of marketing Kelly Woolsey, recent work on making softer, more flexible neoprene makes the new wetsuits an amazingly technical product. In other words: It's not just a rubber suit.

Rubatex 180 Fs If you look at your wetsuit you'll notice that it's not pure rubber. Wetsuit manufacturers utilize neoprene rubber laminated to a thin stretchy jersey material that gives the suit considerably more durability. O'Neill vice president of marketing Mark Tinkus says while there have been recent advances in the rubber that wetsuit manufacturers use, the real leaps have been made in the jersey. This new jersey is considerably more flexible than previous materials, and that's what makes the difference in feel. What this means is that you can have a wetsuit with key panels of super-stretch, which gives the same warmth with more flexibility than an older suit of the same thickness. Used to be if you wanted flexibility you'd go with a thinner suit, but that isn't the case any more.
Rubatex 1800 Another benefit to the super-stretch material is that it allows the new suits to be zipperless, making the suit even more flexible and lighter. Suits made with the new rubber can literally be opened at the neck hole wide enough to step your body in.
Rubatex 320 Almost all companies have incorporated this extra-stretchy rubber into their suits - mostly in the shoulders, under the arms, behind the knees and in the lower back. The more super-stretchy rubber (or as the guys in the O'Neill factory call it, "gooball") a suit uses, the more comfortable and stretchy the suit will be.
Rubatex 373 The trade-off comes in durability. The more flexible rubbers don't wear as well as the less stretchy stuff. Gul's Steve Murray admits that this is true, but says most people are willing to give up some in durability because the suit feels so much better.
Rubatex Rubber Zipless Designs
Rubatex Tape As all makers of zipless suits will tell you, the zipper is an inflexible strip running down the center of your flexible rubber suit. By removing the zipper you in theory gain many advantages. First, you no longer have a major section of your suit that doesn't flex. Second, you no longer have a section of your suit through which cold water can easily enter. Finally, you don't have the potential of a zipper blowing out or ripping.
Rubatex Closing While some say getting in and out of the zipless designs is a pain - and I suppose if you're extremely inflexible it could be difficult - it's really no harder than reaching down your back to pull a zipper or getting a chest zipper closed all the way. Tinkus from O'Neill recalls that there was a huge amount of resistance when wetsuit closures went from front zips to back zips, so he expects there to be some opposition.
Rubatex Closed Cell Gasketing While the manufacturers of zipless designs agree that suits are more flexible without a zipper, the disagreement comes in the execution of the zipless entry. Neil Pryde and Body Glove utilize an entry system in which you stretch open a thin inner neck gasket, climb into the suit, then fit another neck opening over your head. This system is then fastened with Velcro-like shoulder fittings. While this is easy to fasten, it does put extra layers of neoprene on your shoulders. O'Neill's solution is in its ZEN (zipperless entry neck) suits - a simple vee opening from the neck angling halfway down the back. You climb in like a normal suit then just Velcro the back shut. This produces an elegant closure system with no chances of leakage, but it takes more flexibility to close without help.
