Maintenance Tips and Shortcuts

Depending on your perspective, boat ownership can range anywhere from a relaxing day on the water to a futile exercise in frustration. Often the primary factor that determines where on this scale you and your boat fall is how well you have maintained your boat prior to pulling out of the slip. To ease your maintenance schedule, the following maintenance shortcuts and tips come via John Kaufman, author of the book series Boat Repair Made Easy.
Rubatex Msds * No-growth strainers. Air conditioning on board can be an enjoyable relief from the hot, humid days of summer. If you operate the air conditioning regularly, particularly in high-fouling waters, the strainer must be cleaned frequently. This entails removing the strainer cap or bowl, cleaning the debris from the screen and bowl, and reassembling the components when the cleaning is complete. Be certain to grease the contact gaskets to make future removal easier.

Rubatex Neoprene To reduce the frequency of this cleaning routine, place one swimming-pool chlorine tablet in the bowl of a small strainer and two or more tablets in larger strainers. The high concentration of chlorine in the water will inhibit the marine growth. Check the condition of the tablets once a week until their longevity can be determined. This process will work equally well with seawater-cooled refrigeration units.

Rubatex Pipe * Staying fresh. The use of the product Damp Rid will help control the dampness and humidity inside your boat. This is a refillable canister-type moisture collector available at most discount stores. Use at least three units on a 40-foot vessel, more during periods of high humidity. Check and recharge the units often, weekly if possible; you cannot overuse this product.

Winter Maintenance Tips Winter Maintenance Preparing your vehicle for winter driving is almost as important as preparing it for summer. Rubatex Pipe Insulation * Adhesive remover. The adhesive left behind by many forms of tape can be harder to remove than most of the barnacles on the boat's bottom. The products produced to remove these glues are not only expensive but do not always work well. The main purpose of the products is not to remove tape adhesives, but to remove other forms of adhesives and mastics, which are formulated differently than the tape adhesives.

Rubatex 180 The best product I have found to remove the tape's adhesive is Goof Off. It is not a marine product but rather a latex paint remover meant to remove dried latex paint splatters, called "goofs." It is available at most home centers and paint stores in the painting sundries department.

Rubatex 180 Fs Removing the adhesive is simply a matter of saturating the residue with Goof Off, letting it stand for a few minutes and wiping off the surface. A heavier buildup may require more than one application. When the surface is adhesive-free, use window cleaner to remove the leftover Goof Off. If the surface has a wax finish, re-wax the area for protection from the elements.
Rubatex 1800 * Removing rust stains. Unsightly rust stains seem to remain a fact of life in boating. There are many rust stain removers on the market, some of which work well on one surface and not at all on another. For your next rust removal chore, consider two more products - Ospho and WEB.
Rubatex 320 Ospho is formulated not to dissolve rust but to change rust's chemical structure into a surface that can be painted. Not only does this product do its intended job well, it will also remove rust stains from almost any surface of vinyl, metal, paint and fiberglass. (Be extremely careful if you use this product on any fabric, as it may degrade the fabric to faded strings.) WEB is an industrial-strength cleaner containing diluted phosphoric acid and a wetting agent (soap) and is available at most supermarkets and cleaning suppliers.
Rubatex 373 To use these products for rust stain removal, simply dab or spray a small amount on a hidden test area. A scrub brush or toothbrush may be needed on rough surfaces. After a few minutes the rust should start to run and can be wiped off the surface. If the test area results are acceptable, move on to the larger areas, doing a small portion at a time until the entire stain is removed. Some heavily stained areas may require multiple applications to thoroughly remove the stain. After the stain is removed, use a window cleaner or mild detergent to remove the residue, then apply the proper protective coating to the newly cleaned area.
Rubatex Rubber * Look into the future. Once a year or every other oil change, you should have your engine oil analyzed by an oil-testing lab. This simple 10-minute test can tell you what to expect from your engine weeks or even months in advance of a failure. The test will state the amounts of wear on all major components of the engines, such as rings, valves, pistons and bearings. The results also will tell you if water or fuel is in the oil. The oil-test kits cost approximately $20 at marine centers.
