It's Safer to Stay Inside

It's Safer to Stay Inside

Author: By Allan Tarvid
The safest place to mount a transducer is inside the hull, glued down near the transom in the sump area. Unfortunately, an inside mounting offers about as many opportunities for problems as a tax form. The face of the transducer is glued flat against the hull, meaning that the steeper the deadrise, the more the transducer shoots to the side instead of straight down as it should.

Rubatex Msds Solid wedges can compensate for the deadrise angle, but they bend the sound from the transducer face to the hull and add to the thickness of solid material the sound must pass through. Both aspects reduce performance. If a sound-absorbing adhesive is accidentally used, or if air is trapped between transducer and hull during installation, performance also suffers.

Find information on how to make sure you can stay relatively safe on the Internet and how to keep computer viruses, malware and other unwanted stuff off your computer.

Rubatex Neoprene Enter Airmar's new P79 in-hull transducer. Its unique housing adjusts to compensate for any hull deadrise from 2 to 22 degrees. The hollow housing is glued down with a ring of adhesive around its bottom edge; no sound passes through the glue. Insert the transducer, fill the housing with a special liquid and twist on the cap. Sound travels from the transducer's face through the liquid and then through the hull into the water. No air bubbles can be trapped between the hull and the transducer's face. It's also easy to remove the transducer for inspection or replacement.

The P79 sells for about $100, but cost varies depending on depth sounder model. To find out if one is available for your sounder contact Airmar, 35 Meadowbrook Drive, Milford, NH 03055; 603-673-9570; www.airmar.com.
