Schrier, a Morris County freeholder who, like other opponents of the hunt, objected that estimates of the state's bear population, ranging from roughly 1,500 to 3,200, were too vague to be a basis for killing the animals.

Rubatex 1800 In addition, Mr. Schrier said the planned hunt which is intended to kill about 500 bears would take only as many bears as were born last winter, and so would not reduce the total population.

The council, which sets hunting seasons and limits for the state, tried to hold a deer hunt in 2000, but was persuaded by Gov. Christie Whitman to call it off. Mrs. Whitman had been sharply criticized by Mr. McGreevey for supporting the hunt.
