Well Suited:Getting Inside the Latest in Neoprene

Well Suited:Getting Inside the Latest in Neoprene

Author: Tom James
It would be incredibly hard to "test" wetsuits for anyone besides myself because the single most important aspect of a suit is how it fits. All the features in the world aren't going to make a difference if the suit doesn't fit you correctly. But with the influx of new features like ultra-stretchy neoprene, zipless entry and half-zips, I wanted to see just how much better the new suits were. While I offer some personal opinions on my experiences with these suits, the real reason for this review is to showcase some of their features.

Rubatex Msds In general, I recommend buying a wetsuit with as much of the new super-stretchy rubber as you can afford. By afford I don't mean in cost, but in durability. The super-stretch feels so much better that I wouldn't want a wetsuit that didn't feature it at least in the shoulders and behind the knees. But word is that the stuff doesn't last as long as standard neoprene, so chances are you'll be replacing your suit sooner.

Rubatex Neoprene As far as new entry systems, I recommend them for all but the least flexible people. By removing (or shortening) the inflexible zipper down the spine of a suit, the wetsuit feels infinitely better. It's just tough to get on and off.

Rubatex 180 Fs This suit is designed for cold water, but has enough Ultra-Stretch in the sleeves and back panel to make it feel like a much lighter design. Other nice features are the Vee-Lock ankle closures, which make the suit easier to get over your feet. I don't know why every windsurfing suit doesn't feature something like this. Bare is most proud about how it heat-tapes its seams - which means there's no glue to get hard and dry and consequently weaken the seam. This suit has oversized forearms, which is a real benefit to sailors who cramp up or become easily fatigued when wearing a suit.

Rubatex 320 Body Glove

Rubatex 373 2/2 Glove II Fullsuit

Rubatex Rubber I've been wearing Body Glove wetsuits for the past 10 years, and this is clearly the finest suit they've produced. It's both flexible and warm. While this is actually a suit designed for surfing, there's no reason it doesn't make a good windsurfing suit. On inspection, it has a slightly different look - mainly from the double Hyperstretch shoulders. Hyperstretch is a ribbed smooth-skin material that stretches as you move. My favorite features of the Body Glove are the smooth seals at the ankle, wrist and, especially, at the neck. This suit has a shorter zipper than older-style suits. This seems to be a good middle ground between the pure flexibility of a zipperless suit and the ease of entry of a zippered suit.

Felpro Gaskets Sailing in after a good hourlong session in San Francisco Bay, I realized I hadn't once thought about the wetsuit I was wearing and supposedly testing. The thing was so comfortable I forgot to think about it. This, I suppose, is the ultimate compliment.

Poly Products Supplies O'Neill's Zen (zipperless entry neck) is the cleanest zipperless entry I've seen. By cleanest I mean the least cumbersome, though not necessarily the easiest system. It consists of an angled opening, which goes one-third of the way down the back of the suit. It closes with a simple strip of Velcro. This closure system leaves no gaps, so there is no chance of getting a rush of cold water down the suit. Due to the extreme flexibility of the rubber, this suit is easy to get in and out of, but its seal is not the easiest to fix.

Poly Hunting Feeders Another nice feature is the "handcuffs" wrist seal - a form-fitting extension at the wrist that keeps water out without cutting off your circulation.

Neoprene Seat Covers There's only one problem with this wetsuit: I couldn't find water cold enough to give it a real run. I took it in 59-degree water and still was sweating. Of course, there are a lot of warm suits out there, but this one is especially nice because it is flexible. The keys to its flexibility are the neoprene taped seams, which, as opposed to normal taped seams, are considerably more stretchy. I also liked the fact that the knee pads on this suit are low-profile. You don't need thick knee pads on a thick suit and, thankfully, these are as thin as possible. Plus, since the knees are nicely pre-bent and use the same Free Flex panels used in the shoulders, the overall feel of this warm suit is excellent.

Foam Insulation Steamer 3/3

Rubber Industry This is the wetsuit that made me realize I'd never wear an old-style wetsuit again. It's all smooth-skin (nylon 1) with some ultra-stretchable rubber, so you feel like you're literally wearing a warm second skin. Since these suits are so flexible, you can wear a size smaller than normal and still have perfect mobility.

Industrial Petroleum Products This may be the most comfortable suit I tried due to the large amount of super-stretch rubber, but the closure system is somewhat unusual. First you have to put your head through a thin inner lining. Then you pull the outer suit over that. And then you seal it with some shoulder straps. This puts three layers of neoprene on your shoulders, but because the material used is so pliable, you don't notice the extra layers. For windsurfing, this closure is no problem at all, but in certain positions like paddling a surfboard, there are gaps in the neck and shoulder area, which let in water.

Petroleum Refiner Although I liked the easy-entry ankle cuffs, they could be potential tear points.

Rubatex International Pro Motion

Rubatex Msds The Crow 3/3

Rubatex Neoprene I like this suit and this company a lot. Pro Motion is a relatively small wetsuit company based in Hood River, Oregon. While you may not see its suits in every windsurfing shop in the country, Pro Motion specializes in windsurfing suits and is the closest thing to a custom wetsuit company in the industry. The company is especially good at ensuring you get in the suit that fits you best.

Rubatex Pipe Pro Motion says it designs its suits so the actual cut of the wetsuit fits you rather than relying on the stretchiness of the rubber. The Crow has a pre-bent form at the waist and knees, arms are bent out front (like when you're sailing), and the legs and arms are round, not flat.

This suit felt great on me - it had the best fit of any that I tried, but that might be purely circumstantial. Its most prominent feature is the innovative front horizontal zip, which gives all the maneuverability of a no-zip suit but is slightly easier to deal with.
