Rubatex Msds A reactor at the Salem nuclear plant has cleared a federally mandated inspection prompted by the discovery of severe corrosion at a similarly designed plant in Ohio, plant officials said Monday.

Rubatex Pipe The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, or NRC, last month ordered the operators of 68 pressurized water reactors to immediately evaluate whether corrosion could be affecting their facilities.

At present there are about 440 reactors in 32 countries which generate 16% of the world's electricity. Accidents, terrorism, security and expense are obviously major concerns, although countries such as the US, Japan and India are shifting towards more nuclear energy use. There are 30 more reactors under construction in 13 countries. China alone plans to build another two a year for 15 years. Even Russia says it intends that 25 per cent of its energy needs should be met from nuclear power by 2025. in particular the issues of securing nuclear plants against terrorist attacks, toxicity which needs careful management, it has its supporters and may rise again to the top of the political agenda.

Rubatex Pipe Insulation The order came after inspectors at Davis-Besse, near Toledo, found a football-sized hole had eaten nearly through the plant's 6-inch-thick steel reactor head. Rubatex 180 The corrosion was caused by boric acid, which is added to reactor cooling water but is not supposed to be on the outside of the reactor.

Rubatex 180 Fs The acid escaped through minor leaks and was hidden by insulation atop the reactor head, according to the NRC.

Rubatex 1800 During the Salem inspection, operators removed the insulation that covers the reactor head and looked for any signs of boric acid deposits that could be an indication of a leak, Sindoni said.

Rubatex 320 The examinations were conducted by two certified inspectors and were observed by the NRC, he said.

Rubatex 373 No deposits were found and the plant operators are 100 percent confident there are no indications of leaks and no indications of any corrosion due to the presence of boric acid, Sindoni said.

Rubatex Rubber A similar inspection of Salem Unit 1 was completed in the spring of 2001 and no evidence of boric acid deposits or corrosion was found. The Salem Unit 1 reactor head is planned for another visual inspection during the fall 2002 refueling outage.

Rubatex Tape The Hope Creek plant, adjacent to the Salem plants, and the Oyster Creek plant in Ocean County are boiling water reactors and not subject to the order.

Rubatex Closing The Salem and Hope Creek plants are operated by PSEG Nuclear, a subsidiary of PSEG Power, an affiliate of Public Service Electric and Gas Co.
