Family Loses 4 Rabbits To Bear

Rubatex 1800 Schumann, who's lived in the home on Roaring Rock Road since 1963, said his family began seeing bears in 1998. The bears typically rooted through Schumann's garbage or ate sunflower seeds from the bird feeder hanging outside their kitchen window.

Rubatex 373 Bear sightings peaked in 1999 when the Schumanns documented 41 visits by at least eight different bears, Schumann said. On one occasion, a mother bear and three large cubs were in his yard, Schumann said.

Rubatex Tape "It's certainly a concern. You're always looking out the window when the kids play outside," Schumann said.

Poly Products Supplies The state Fish and Game Council scheduled a bear hunt this year, but DEP Commissioner Bradley Campbell refused to issue any permits, Makatura said. DEP, which processes hunting licenses, received 3,200 bear hunt permit applications, Makatura said.

Poly Hunting Feeders US Sportsmen Alliance has sued the state to force the DEP to issue licenses. Oral arguments in the case are scheduled for Tuesday in state Superior Court's Appellate Division in Trenton.
