Video Fly Box

Video Fly Box

Author: Jim Rizzuto
IGFA record holder Deighton Emmons ties picture-perfect flies and stores them in fly boxes he makes from videotape holders. A box will hold a dozen or more flies up to 8 inches long. The translucent plastic lets you see the flies without popping the lid. The material is corrosion-proof with no parts to rust. And the boxes are inexpensive; we buy them in packs of a dozen for about 50 cents each at large discount stores.

Rubatex Msds All you need to do to make a fly box is hot-glue two strips of foam or cork crossways at about the locations of the holes on the videotape box. Store your flies by sticking them into the foam with the eye of the hook pointing toward the nearest end of the box. One of the boxes in our illustration has a complete foam floor; that works well too and allows you to adjust the location of your flies in the box with a little more freedom.

Rubatex Neoprene That's all you have to do, unless you want to make your box breathe to let out moisture. Think hard about that option before you start poking holes in the box. You might prefer to keep your boxes watertight. Emmons fishes the shoreline (his IGFA fly-casting record is for bluefin trevally caught in the surf) and likes to make sure his flies stay dry even when he isn't. For boat fishing, I'm not concerned about the possibility of inundation. (If that happens, I've got bigger problems than keeping my flies dry.) I poke holes in the end of the box with a drill to allow air to circulate.

Box makes it easy to save a lot of information and makes it easily accessible. I use Box for storage of photos and other marketing materials I need for running my company. Also, my daughter recently moved out to California and because of Box she is able to send me photos and videos which help me to still feel part of her life. What a fabulous tool!

Rubatex Pipe For foam, Emmons uses whatever he has handy. He likes surfboard foam best, but that isn't very readily available. Second best is the kind of packing foam that comes with electronic gear such as videos, computers and cassette players. (Don't you always wish you had something more to do with it than just throw it away?) But any dense closed-cell foam will work.

  • Collect information on every possible source of media that may have interest in your video (magazines, radio, Podcasts, Web sites, etc.).
  • Contact each and ask about their wants and needs.
  • Sort according to type (print, broadcast and Web) and desirability.
  • Record media lead times, preferred method of information submission (email, fax, snail mail) and type of information preferred (press release, Web link, video press kit, roll footage, photos, audio tape, etc.).

Rubatex Pipe Insulation I have fly boxes in which the foam is strips cut from the soles of discarded thong slippers, and others where the floor of the box is lined with sheet cork from a hobby shop.

There is also a website just for Skysurfers, with fun activities and useful information about flying with us.

Z sets itself apart from traditional RC airplanes. Z is virtually ready to fly right out of the box. ( charger.) It is designed to fly indoors only and flies more slowly and is easier to control. Finally, Z¯ body is made out of tough Polypropylene foam, able to withstand most crashes into walls, ceilings and floors. (We can° promise it will win against a ceiling fan.)
